2016 SONY TV LINEUP: DECODED

X940D Series (XBR-75X940D)

The ultimate badass TV in Sony’s lineup is the flagship X940D: a full-array LED (FALD) LCD that achieves HDR compatibility via Sony’s hardware local dimming called X-tended Dynamic Range Pro. There’s also a new backlight design this year, which Sony calls Slim Backlight Drive, and Sony’s Triluminos colour system, a quantum-dot based, side-mounted color enhancement system.

KEY SPECS:
• 4K/UHD resolution
• Triluminos
• Full-array backlight with local dimming
• Android TV & 4K Processor X1

X930D Series (XBR-55X930D & XBR-65X930D)
Essentially sharing flagship status with the X940D, the 55- and 65-inch X930D TVs are actually quite similar to Sony’s largest offering. They both boast 4K/UHD resolution, Sony’s X1 upscaled, Triluminos color, and the Android TV smart platform. However, the X930D sets use a slimmer LED backlight and lesser number of backlight zones than the X940D, allowing them to utilize full-array local dimming while maintaining a slim side profile.

KEY SPECS:
• 4K/UHD resolution
• Triluminos
• Slim backlight drive local dimming
• Android TV & 4K Processor X1
X850D Series

The four X850D TVs boast similar specs to Sony’s higher-end options, including 4K resolution, X1 upscaling, the Android TV operating system, and HDR compatibility.

KEY SPECS:
• 4K/UHD resolution
• Triluminos and sidelit HDR
